Will jewelers metal underneath a coating of 14K gold plating rust or deteoriate?

I just ordered a 14K Gold plated chain and the guy that is selling it said that the chain is made out of a Jewelers Metal core (zinc) and is coated with 14K gold plate. Please tell me nothing will go wrong when I purchase it !

1. since gold is covering the zinc, no oxygen and water can get to the zinc, so it will never rust the gold will always protect it buy it
