How can I make shapes and rings using hemp and knots?

I'm mystified as to how people put the ends of knotted hemp together to form shapes, rings, etc. I would like to try to make a peace sign for a necklace, and also a ring, but so far I can only make straight things like necklaces and bracelets. How do people make shapes and rings? I know how to do the square, zigzag, overhand, half, and spiral knots. I just can't figure out how to put the shape together.

1. burn the ends together and they look seamless
