What are the rings that you see when a fighter jet is in after burner mode?

These rings can be seen from SR71 down to a f16 when after burners are in use.

Public Comments

  1. they are called shock diamonds
  2. When the afterburner is on, the exhaust flame shows shock-diamonds, which are caused by shock waves being formed due to slight differences between ambient pressure and the exhaust pressure. These imbalances cause oscillations in the exhaust jet diameter over distance and cause the visible banding where the pressure and temperature is highest
  3. Lots of fire coming out the back
  4. shock diamonds/waves from the supersonic ejection of the air/fuel out the nozzle
