Does members of the Independant Jewelers Organization support the GIA?
Or does the GIA support members of the Independent Jewelers Organization? I am working with a member of the IJO and didn't know if they could provide me with a GIA certificate on their diamonds or if that was contradictory. I am not familiar with the industry.

- They are both "independent" rating services designed to give you a "neutral and impartial" opinion on the value of a diamond. There are many such organizations but GIA is the most well recognized. Having a GIA certification gives you a more reliable valuation on a diamond but remember that it's not a perfect science. Ultimately this process always comes down to the opinion of the person reviewing the diamond. There are guidelines but it's still subjective to a person's opinion. Also keep in mind that there is an ENORMOUS profit margin built into jewelry. Paying about 25% of the actual appraised value is pretty good but you can do better. Most think they're getting a good deal at half the appraised value. Good luck!
